BLUE RIDGE TREE CLIMBING
What You’ll Experience:
- Tree climbers will gather again this year at Tanglewood Park in North Carolina to share in the adventure and camaraderie of tree climbing. These Rendezvous events are always wonderful. New and experienced climbers come to teach and learn from each other while spending long hours in the trees or at specialized workshops and lectures. Tanglewood is truly a unique place with perhaps the largest concentration of exceptionally big trees on the east coast. You literally have to see this spectacular place to believe it! You won’t want to leave!
Some veteran climbers are familiar with Tanglewood Park, as Blue Ridge Tree Climbing has hosted several climbing events there over the years. This year, park administration is giving us parking near all of the groves, so no long bushwhacking hikes are necessary. Also, they have given us access to climbing areas which are new to us. One is a fairly large swamp next to the Yadkin River that will thrill the swamp foxes and birders in the group. An elevated bike and walking trail provides great access and viewing. - Speakers and workshops:
- Ken VanGorder, aka: Cecil Hemp author of Kno-Knonsense Knots. Ken is a true knot genius. He has seen similarities in knots that no one else has noticed. You will be amazed at his knot tying skills.
- Nick Araya, aka: Nick the Splicer. Most of you know Nick and his expertise. Another amazing guy that is a true master of the art.
- Chris Weavil: the maintenance supervisor and certified arborist for Tanglewood Park, also the park historian. The history of Tanglewood goes back to colonial times when England was still in charge. You will really enjoy his presentation.
- Joe Maher, aka: Jungle Joe. Joe will be speaking on wilderness climbing for those of you that like to get well off the beaten path.
- Sarah Lyttle, aka: Stick Lady. Sarah will lead you through yoga poses designed to increase flexibility and unkink the knots in the body. Most of us can surely use that!
Accommodations and Pricing:
- Most people will probably want to stay in the campgrounds. There are also four cabins available for those who want or need a bed. A bunk in one of the cabins is an additional flat fee of $100 for all 4 nights. There will be an all-women’s cabin that sleeps seven; the three others sleep five each. These are shared rooms; linens are supplied. There are also furnished kitchens in each cabin, so stock up at the Harris Teeter grocery store located at the park entrance and you’ll be set for the long weekend.
- The "Early Bird" price for rendezvous registration is $125 through June 30th. After that the price will go up to $160. This price includes campsite space and a limited edition t-shirt. Meals are not included.)
